AYA OHSAKA

ABOUT

Aya Ohsaka / Leather Artist

In 1999, Aya Ohsaka began creating self-taught leather accessories, producing a hand-sewn leather bag & accessory brand in New York. She returned to Japan and in 2007 started her apprenticeship under a Tokyo craftsman and began producing leather goods combining traditional hand-sewn leather with her own unique techniques. She has been teaching hand-sewn leather bag making at a craft school in Tokyo for 10 years, emphasizing the importance of traditional hand sewing and the senses our fingertips alone allow. While seeking to position leather in an environmentally friendly setting, her unique vantage has allowed for her unexampled expression through leather. She majored in dance at Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, and her contemporary dance choreographic skills and an innate understanding of the spatial configuration of the human body, have influenced her craftsmanship, aesthetics and philosophy to no small degree.
